The short answer
Reddit Ads is a paid distribution and testing programme: a defined audience, creative, a media budget and an intended action. Reddit GEO examines and develops a brand’s presence in discussions relevant to AI visibility, alongside a record of observed AI answers.
You can run both. But paid impressions are not purchased AI citations, and appearing in an answer does not demonstrate a visit or a sale.
Compare the work, not just the monthly fee
| Question | Reddit Ads | Reddit GEO |
|---|---|---|
| What is the goal? | Distribute a message and test whether it prompts an action. | Develop a relevant community presence and observe AI visibility. |
| What work is involved? | Planning, targeting, creative, campaign management and analysis. | Auditing, discussion mapping, transparent participation and citation analysis. |
| What are you paying for? | Management and creative fees, separate from spend paid to Reddit. | Research, participation and monitoring within an agreed scope. |
| What is measured? | Delivery, clicks and attributed actions under the agreed tracking setup. | Mentions and citations in a defined sample; Reddit traffic reported separately. |
| What is not guaranteed? | Profitability or recommendations in AI answers. | A post staying live or a model citing your contribution. |
Reddit offers targeting options that include communities and interests. Check current availability in the advertising account and in Reddit’s targeting documentation.
Three situations to work through
These are hypothetical decision scenarios, not customer results.
You have an offer and a conversion-ready landing page
An Ads test can help compare messages for a selected audience. Agree on the desired action, test budget and continuation criteria first. If visitors do not convert, review the offer and landing page as well as targeting.
Buyers already compare your category on Reddit
Start with the conversations and the sources observed in AI answers. If Reddit is relevant to the target market, evaluate a GEO programme. Useful discussions are not evidence that an AI tool will necessarily retrieve or cite them.
You want an ongoing place for customers
A branded subreddit answers a different question: why would members return? It needs an editorial purpose, moderation and ongoing participation. It is neither an ad placement nor a shortcut to AI recommendations.
Questions to settle before signing a proposal
- Which country, language and buyer group are in scope? “English-speaking” is not a complete market definition.
- Which outcome matters: reading, signing up, making an enquiry or purchasing?
- Which communities show relevant demand, and what participation do their rules allow?
- Who supplies product facts, approves contributions and handles sensitive questions?
- Are management fees, creative costs and ad spend itemised separately?
- Who owns the accounts, access and data, including after the engagement ends?
Compare responsibilities and deliverables, not just retainers. A package described only as a number of comments does not establish whether those comments will be relevant or welcome.
Keep the limits visible
Transparent brand participation, community-specific rules and restraint matter. Reddit’s spam policy is a useful starting point; an agency relationship does not exempt anyone from those rules.
Reddit activity does not replace a useful, accessible website. Google says its existing SEO foundations also apply to AI search features; no special optimisation guarantees inclusion.
When you combine Ads and GEO, separate paid delivery and conversions from conversation activity and observed AI visibility. Our guide to reading a GEO report explains how to keep those measurements distinct.
